This Week…

Friday, 26th of May

Cable Ties at Record Paradise

Cable Ties and Shrimpwitch played their first gigs in the same backyard, and they’re coming together again to celebrate the release of their respective new albums.

They’re playing instore at Record Paradise in Brunswick from 6pm on Friday. All ages, free entry and cheap drinks but first come first serve so head down early.

Friday, 26th of May

The Ocean Party and Golden Syrup

On the door

gg-ocean-party-may-26

Later on and around the corner on Friday, two other fantastic acts are coming together to play at The Tote.

Friday, 26th May

10 May Ripe’s Weekend Gig Guide (10/5/17)

Music venues around Melbourne house some of the best local and international acts. We’ve compiled our top five picks for gigs this week so you don’t miss out. Be a part of one of the best live music cities in the world, and check out some of our favourite artists and venues.

This Week…

8pm – 12am Thursday, 11th May

Rolling Blackouts C.F. ‘The French Press’ EP Tour

~ Sold Out ~

gg-harvey-sutherland-apr-6

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are back in town after touring the U.S. and visiting their new label Sub Pop (you might have heard of them).

So it’s no surprise that they’re not a local secret anymore — both this show and their show on Friday night have sold out. I’d strongly suggest hustling on the Facebook event page for a ticket, because this is likely the last time you’ll get to see them at a venue like The Tote.

8pm – 11:30pm Friday, 12th May

Jess Locke ‘Better/Bitter’ Tour at Woody’s Bar

$10

gg-hysterical-records-apr-7

Jess Locke came out of nowhere last month and jumped straight into high rotation for us with the single ‘Better/Bitter’. Since then we’ve kept an eye on her, and she’s just signed with Pool House Records (new The Smith Street Band label) and Remote Control Records.

The band room at Woody’s Bar isn’t very big, so I suggest getting there early.

9pm – 1am Friday, 12th May

Billy Davis and The Good Lords ‘Ball & Chain’ Release

$18

gg-split-singles-apr-7

I think Billy Davis might be the physically biggest local band at the moment. It’s nearly impossible to find a negative comment about their live show, which is full of energy and optimism.

They stole the show at The Curtin during Good Island earlier this year, and received plenty of boots at Golden Plains (boots at GP = very good thing). If your friends are picky and hard to get out to gigs, this is a safe bet to drag them along to.

8pm – 12am Saturday, 13th May

Royal Headache at The Curtin Hotel

$22

gg-diet-apr-8

We’re living in strange times here in 2017. Royal Headache should be one of the biggest bands in Australia by now, selling out huge venues on even bigger tours. The fact that tickets for this gig were only 22 bucks is almost criminal.

Keep clicking refresh on that Facebook page for tickets being sold. Sometimes people go too hard on a Friday, check their bank account on a Saturday and sell off their tickets for that night. Well, at least I hope so.

2pm – 6pm Sunday, 14th May

Girlatones w Caroline No and 19th Century Strongmen

~ FREE ENTRY ~

gg-daydreams-apr-9

Sunday gigs can be tough, but luckily this one doesn’t kick off until 2pm. Whether you’re looking for kick-ons or you just love live music, if you see Girlatones they’ll be your cool new find for the weekend.

Watching Caroline No playing live is also a recommendation. If you have a nagging feeling you already have plans, consider this your friendly reminder that this Sunday is also Mother’s Day.

This Week…

7:30pm – 12am Thursday, 4th May

Plastic EP Release w Hollow Everdaze & Eilish Gilligan

$10 + $1.50bf

gg-harvey-sutherland-apr-6

A few great bands are kicking off the weekend early this Thursday night, playing together across two different events. The Curtin will see the launch of Plastic‘s new EP Air Conditioning, which pairs strong early-Strokes vibes with more ambitious psychedelic influences.

Hollow Everdaze and Eilish Gilligan are both playing support, filling out the line-up to make the night worth every penny.

8pm – 11pm Thursday, 4th May

Pregnancy “First Kiss” Single Launch

~Free Entry~

gg-hysterical-records-apr-7

Pregnancy (Zac Denton of The Ocean Party plus members of Totally Mild, Ciggie Witch, Cool Sounds, and Arthur Penn and the Funky Ten) are playing on Thursday night too, for the launch of ‘First Kiss’ off their EP from last year.

It may seem like quite a delayed launch, but that is likely attributable to how damn busy they are with other projects — and making their debut album for release on July 17th. Frances Fox, Tenderhooks and Qwerty! are all on the line-up as well.

11pm – 8am Friday, 5th May

¿Club D’érange? x Common Ground w Intergalactic Gary

$15 + $1.50bf

gg-split-singles-apr-7

With two of Melbourne’s best curators Simon TK and Louis McCoy on the line-up, you know your money is in good hands — but those two combined still have half of the experience of veteran DJ Intergalactic Gary from the Netherlands.

Intergalactic Gary has been DJing since the ‘80s and playing all around the world since the ‘90s. He’s seen it all and can spin almost anything at this point. Head down to Hugs&Kisses prepared to learn a trick or two.

6pm – 11pm Saturday, 6th May

Darcy Baylis presents Intimacy & Isolation LIVE

$18 + $1.50bf

gg-diet-apr-8

This show has so many selling points. Darcy Baylis is finally playing his fantastic new album, joined on the line-up by Wet Lips, Truth-n-Dare and DJ Jalé.

That’s not all — this is happening inside a restored 1920s Church Hall in Fitzroy North. The Auditorium features a domed timber ceiling, with both seating and standing areas and it’s wheelchair accessible.

9pm – 3am Saturday, 6th May

Stranger In Paradise: Chiara Kickdrum, Kiti, Awesome Wales

$14.80

gg-daydreams-apr-9

Perhaps the highlight of my summer was when DJ Kiti closed Paradise Music Festival on the basement stage. At a freezing cold Lake Mountain, DJ Kiti’s set packed out the basement to the steamy peak where tops became optional.

The Paradise Festival crew and DJ Kiti are teaming up again on Saturday for Strangers In Paradise at The Gasometer. Also DJing is Chiara Kickdrum (live) and Awesome Wales, guaranteed to have you in a spin until 3am.
