26 Oct RÜFÜS w/ Cassian at The Forum Theatre, 22/10/15

Playing at The Forum says a lot about how far a band has come along, and Sydney outfit RÜFÜS had a whopping three. You may be surprised to find out RÜFÜS’ fans are mostly on the male side, with a number of bros hanging out, enjoying their cute night out with the boiz. I saw multiple attempts at shuffling, which truly took me back to my year 10 days, yet it made me so pleased to see guys going to a gig and just having fun and not caring what other people think. I will forever hold them in admiration.

But I’m here to talk about RÜFÜS’ performance, not the shuffling skills of a 25-year-old. The Forum is a big place, and it takes a lot of bodies to fill it and create an atmosphere. Getting there an hour early to see support act Cassian, a talented producer/DJ from Sydney, dressed all in white and ready to break some hearts. Girls were diggin’ it, I was diggin’ it, and of course the bros were diggin’ it. I unfolded my arms and let myself bop a little bit, enjoying such remixes of Hayden James’ There’s Something About You’ as well as a few of his own tracks. It was a clever choice for a warm up act, and photographer Sarah and I now realise whenever we cover gigs together we seem to discover a support we don’t know inside-out, but come out thoroughly enjoying. Cassian was once again one of these.

There was no doubt the stars of the show were the three lads of RÜFÜS. Playing for around an hour and a half, they definitely gave the crowd their money’s worth. A huge crowd, and an extremely responsive crowd at that. Songs about love and cute things that make girls swoon had boys fist pumping and taking another swig from their can of Jack Daniel’s. I even got my dance on a bit during their better-known songs such as their newie ‘You Were Right’ and golden oldies like ‘Take Me’. It’s a band you are reopened to when the singles you remember from that summer-back-in-the-day pop up again. Immense beats and fabulous lighting made for a phenomenal show.

I was close to shuffling myself, as people were belting the words to ‘Sundream’ around me. The new album is going to be a ripper, I can tell. Just ask the bros. Look for the long line tees and boy crews and ask them their thoughts.

They’ll tell it how it is.
