08 Mar Ripe’s Australian Chart (8/3/16)

Ripe’s Australian Chart is our weekly rotation of the best new music by Australian artists released in the last month. With so much great local music coming out at the moment, we’ve got a huge pile of 35 tracks in this week’s playlist.

We start this week at #35 with ‘Magic Button‘ by Twelve Point Buck, who come from outside of Sydney in the Blue Mountains. The lo-fi and casual fuzzy sounds of ‘Magic Button’ come from a new three track EP titled Cheezel Dust. You can catch them supporting Zeahorse at The Record Crate in Sydney on April 2nd. At #34 we head up north to Brisbane for the three piece garage band Bent, who released a video for ‘Skeleton Man‘. The aesthetic rawness and “I don’t give a fuck” attitude of the song and video give Bent this punk edge that manages to avoid sounding whiny or immature.

We have another new track at #31 from the emerging Melbourne label Deaf Ambitions (Leisure Suite, Crepes, Redspencer and Zone Out). This time it’s Tourist Dollars with ‘Horse Girl‘ off their upcoming debut EP. ‘Horse Girl’ was mastered by Mikey Young and somewhat reminds me of Kaiser Chiefs. At #26 we have Blake Gilray from Sydney with the addictive ‘Guru Glock (Preview)’. The 19 year old samples the video game Zelda and then throws on top a glockenspiel hook with effective results. This is the third time he’s featured in an Australian Ripe Chart, making it three from three now. Look out for this young sharp producer to make big splashes soon.

Back in Melbourne for $25 with Ariela Jacobs who uploaded a video for ‘Lost‘. ‘Lost’ reminds of Bat For Lashes and contains the most moving moment of the week, when Ariela sings “I can’t wait to be alone with you”. Her EP Yesteryear is now available on her bandcamp. We stay in Melbourne at #18 with ‘After Midnight Special‘ by A.M. Limonata. The disco-house track features on a new EP titled Mansion. You can catch After Midnight Limonata playing sets every Thursday this month at Boney in the CBD.

In Sydney at #16 where Anatole has released a remix of ‘You Tore Out My Heart‘ by Tiny Little Houses from Melbourne. Anatole has managed to make an already heartbreaking song, more heartbreaking with a sprinkle of orchestral intimacy. Anatole even attempts to play the flute for the first time on this remix. The diverse talents of Anatole intrigue me as a potential producer for Australian vocalists. At #14 the Melbourne garage rock band Bad Vision have released a video for ‘Goons‘. The video is a long one-take featuring the in and out movements of housemates in a sharehouse while the band play out back. Apparently the video took 15 attempts.

Rainbow Chan pops in at #13 with ‘Nest‘ off her forthcoming debut album later this year. The Sydney via Hong Kong alt-pop talent sings about a past relationship where she “built a nest for you”, but it was apparently “not enough for you”. I can’t help but wonder if the line “you’ll only remind me of bubble gum and ice cream kisses in in the sun” is referring to a Bubble O Bill. Newcastle’s Mall Grab continues to appear in these charts with ‘Down‘ at #12. ‘Down’ carries a huge Reality Testing by Lone vibe, and the execution is just as impressive. Mall Grab is heading to Europe later this year and is currently looking for bookings.

Melbourne’s Alistair Montfort has a new project called Snakes and Friends, which he’s somehow find time for between work with Dick Diver, Total Control, Lower Plenty and UV Race. The first single ‘Missus and the Masses‘ comes in at #9. Alistair isn’t taking himself too seriously with this project and it’s really endearing. The warped keyboard sound he throws in is hilarious and fun. We stay in Melbourne with ‘Meet Me In The Middle‘ by Ciggie Witch at #7. ‘Meet Me In The Middle’ is heavily nostaglic and filled with meticulous detailed touches, which make the song very replayable. I can see myself coming back to it all year.

The track of the week at #5 comes out of Melbourne from ScotDrakula‘s lead singer Matt Neumann‘s new side-project called Cosmic Rays. ‘Teen Bank Robbers On Heroin‘ is his first solo single and it’s catchy as hell. I’ve had multiple sections of this song stuck in my head all week. It’s somewhat a cross between ‘Take Me To The Riot‘ by Stars and ‘All My Friends‘ by LCD Soundsystem. If you’re familiar with ScotDrakula, you’ll immediately notice a completely different vocal approach and it this case it works. Matt has proven to be a clever song writer in the past with ScotDrakula, but unfortunately not a diverse one up until this point. However with this Cosmic Rays project, he take it anywhere he wants at this point, making his follow-up releases a must-watch in 2016.
